Portsmouth Cathedral proud to participate in D-Day 80 Commemorations

As we approach the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Portsmouth Cathedral is honoured to participate in a series of significant events to commemorate this important moment in anniversary. Our involvement spans several key dates and includes performances, special services, and collaborations with local schools. Here is an overview of what we have planned.

Sunday 2nd June - Live Broadcast on BBC Radio 4

At 8:10am, we will host a live broadcast of ‘Sunday Worship’ on BBC Radio 4, featuring the premiere of a new piece by composer George Richford. This piece is particularly special as it takes its text from poems broadcast across France by the BBC, which were coded to signal the French Resistance into action ahead of D-Day in 1944. The service will also include a poignant reading by Field Marshal Montgomery's granddaughter. Please note doors will close at least 30 mins ahead of the service, please arrive promptly.

Wednesday 5th June - National Commemoration on Southsea Common

Our Junior Choir will perform at the National Commemoration on Southsea Common at 11am, which will be broadcast live on BBC One. This event will be attended by the King and Queen, as well as the Prince of Wales.

We are thrilled to have formed a special D-Day 80 Children’s Choir for this occasion, in collaboration with local schools including St John’s RC Primary School, Langstone Junior, St George’s Beneficial, St Jude’s Primary, Mayville School, Portsmouth High School, and Portsmouth Grammar School. The first rehearsal took place last week, and the children are eagerly preparing for their performance.

Thursday 6th June - D-Day Stone Remembrance Service

At 11am, our choir will sing at the D-Day Stone Remembrance Service in Southsea. This annual tradition honours the bravery and sacrifice of those who took part in the D-Day landings. The service provides a moment for reflection and gratitude, ensuring that the legacy of those who fought and died is never forgotten.
