A Commemoration and Thanksgiving for the Life of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

This Sunday, Portsmouth Cathedral welcome people from across the city and diocese to attend A Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving for the Life of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
This service will be an opportunity for the people of the City and Diocese of Portsmouth to come together and express their affection and gratitude for our late Sovereign. The service will be attended by the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant, the Lord Mayor, the Leader of the City Council, as well as several other civic and community leaders.
The Bishop of Portsmouth, The Right Reverend Dr Jonathan Frost, will be preaching at the service on Sunday with the Portsmouth Cathedral Choir singing music drawn from across the nations of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Music will include Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s ‘Pie Jesu’, as well as ‘We wait for thy loving kindness, O Lord’ by William McKie, sung at the Queen’s wedding 75 years ago.

In this evensong, we mark the presence of the Little Hope Exhibition in the Cathedral and pray for those involved in the work of Little Hope in Ukraine. We pray too for peace throughout the world.

Our Lenten pilgrimage starts on Ash Wednesday with services of music and readings - as well as traditional 'ashing' with the sign of the Cross, signifying repentance and reminding us of our mortality and our need of God.
The Sarum Cycle, a series of 13 painted meditations on Christ’s Passion by Nicholas Mynheer, will be on display at Portsmouth Cathedral throughout Lent and Easter.

Join us to mark the start of Lent in this said service of Communion. During the service, you will be invited to receive the sign of the cross in ash on your forehead as a symbol of penitence with music from our Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars.
