I kissed dating goodbye’, released in 1997, warned that dating would cause irreparable emotional damage and that only a strictly boundaried friendship would be acceptable before marriage. This radical book sold over 1 million copies and was quickly passed around many youth groups, and strongly advocated for total sexual abstinence in teenagers, and at its worse heaped shame and condemnation on anyone who was sexually active. This book was the height of the Evangelical ‘purity culture’ and was predominantly used to weaponise God’s word to younger Christians. The book has since been discontinued and disbanded after the author realised that many thousands of youths were hurt and unhelpfully influenced by it.
